Sydney Eastern Suburbs - One Big Family
Welcome to Eastern Suburbs Community Network
A place to work together and support each other
The most effective communities have things in common, share information and do things together - Local community papers shared news within communities and supported things like street festivals - Social media helps people share information, but does nothing for the community.
If done at all that function has passed to public and community bodies - Newspapers know businesses - Public bodies know landlords. Businesses were the bridge. Now the circle is broken and social cohesion diminished - Add to that problems like Covid and people have become more isolated.
The diagram below shows how we can rejoin businesses, charities, public bodies and residents, gradually regaining social cohesion.

SOME USEFUL BACKGROUND INFORMATION
WHY COLLABORATION WORKS
Most local marketing falls into two categories — and both have limitations:-
1. Traditional Advertising - High visibility, but low trust.
Ads can reach a lot of people, but: -
They are often ignored
They rarely lead to immediate action
They compete with hundreds of other messages
People don’t act on ads - they act on recommendations.
2. Simple Networking - Good relationships, but limited results.
Networking builds trust, but: -
There’s no structure
Referrals are inconsistent
Opportunities are often missed
Good intention - but no system to generate reliable results.
3. Collaborative Marketing - the best of both — without the weaknesses
Our model combines: -
The visibility of advertising
The trust that's built on networking
A structured system that drives results
WHY IT'S MORE EFFECTIVE: -
1. Multiple Touchpoints - Print + directory + QR + conversations + referrals
People see you more than once
2. Shared Trust - You’re part of a group of trusted local businesses
Credibility increases immediately
3. Active Support - Members don’t just list - they collaborate
Referrals and support become natural
4. Better Quality Referred Customers: -
Trust you faster
Decide quicker
Stay longer
5. Costs are Shared Across the Network - Instead of paying alone:
You benefit from shared promotion and visibility
6. Local Focus - Designed specifically for: -
Double Bay and the Eastern Suburbs
More relevant, better engagement and stronger results

BUT ISN'T SOCIAL MEDIA QUICKER AND EASIER?
YES - IT CAN BE
Social media is quick to use, easy to access, and can be effective in the short term. But for many local businesses, results are inconsistent. Posts are often seen by only a small percentage of followers, and visibility can disappear within hours unless you keep posting or pay to boost content.
THAT'S WHERE THE CHALLENGE LIES
Social media relies on constant effort and repetition - and even then, each business is largely promoting itself in isolation, often to the same audience, with little lasting impact.
COLLABORATIVE MARKETING WORKS DIFFERENTLY
Instead of relying on one channel, your business becomes part of a broader local system — combining print, digital visibility and real-world connections. More importantly, you are supported by other trusted businesses who help extend your reach through referrals, recommendations and shared opportunities.
THE RESULT IS NOT JUST VISIBILITY - IT'S REINFORCEMENT
People see you, hear about you, and are recommended to you - this builds trust and leads to better outcomes over time.
Social media still has a role to play - but when combined with a collaborative local platform, it becomes far more effective.
